I was downsized and having difficulty finding a new job. I have degrees in Business Management and Marketing. Was working in Operations in New Jersey.

Can’t find a job. Monster, Craig’s List, Yahoo etc seem to have hundreds of apps for each listing.

Been awhile since I looked for work.

Any suggestions on what to do? I have already reached out to all my contacts.

The best way for a mid-career profession to find a comparable job is to “network”. You’ve started doing that; don’t stop. Check back in periodically. Make sure you’re looking at the full range of contacts: former customers/clients, vendors, contractors, colleagues, and people with whom you might have collaborated in other companies, people in your community, church, social group, etc.

Another option is to expand your contact base by joining professional groups that reflect your professional interests. Go to their meetings and events and network there. Be sure to use their specialized internet job alert functions.

If needed, get a temporary job with a company you might delight in. Show them what you can do and you might be able to work your way into a permanent job. You may need to consider starting at a lower salary, and working your way back up, but it’s a job!

Sending a resume to a company that doesn’t know you is only a way to establish a personal contact (interview). When you network, you’re establishing the vital relationship first, which may result in a request for a resume and hopefully, an interview and job!

You said that it’s been a while since you looked for work. Don’t let your guard down! Use this time to study to keep up with your field and to develop yourself. Even consider becoming a specialist and marketing yourself in that way.

Perhaps you can do contract work. That would look excellent on your resume.

You can also consider a career switch, presuming that new area is not harshly subject to today’s economy.

This is a tough economic time. Be patient, keep plugging away and don’t ever let yourself get discouraged. You’ll find a job with time.

    Excellent luck!

What else can you do? I know you’ve been in business management, but can you cook, draw, write? Consider making a career change. If you can cook become a chef, if you can draw become an illustrator, if you can write, be a copywriter. You have years of experience. Don’t limit yourself to what you used to do. Go outside the box.

The 2010 Census has started hiring throughout the US for field positions. They pay well and you can pretty much make your own schedule. Here is the web site… you will need to take a test but it’s not hard and you can do the practice test online. here is the telephone number to call to find a test in your area 1-866-861-2010 call as soon as possible because the sooner you take the test the sooner you get a call.

How it works is … you take the test and then you are entered into their database, as soon as they need people in your area they will start calling from the top of the list. You have a better chance of getting a call if your availability is open.

If you take the test and don’t like your score you can take the test as many times as you want and they will always place the highest score in the computer.

I took the test and got a call two weeks later – Hope this helps excellent luck.
